I was so tempted to make a countertop out of painted mdf by the way. You could also rip down the boards on a table saw if need be to get them to the right size. Start with 1 6 pine boards. All boards are like this 2 x 4 s are actually 1 5 x 3 5 etc so when we cut them down by 1 4 inch on each side that equaled 1 2 inch per board which brought it down to 5 inches per board.

Depending on your counter size you may need three 1x6s and a 1 8 i did just measure your original counters then do the math to see what size you need to put together. Soft wood will mark easily and be less durable over time. And i d love for one of you to try that out and send me pictures.
